HOMECOMING BURNS NIGHT: Jan 2009 |
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT TIME AND HERE'S TO 2009! And to celebrate a great end to last year.... i.e. the 'Life Up the Raw' Folk theatre, when we had a fantastic turnout and great audience participation which did a lot to restore my enthusiasm for keeping this club going! What a night and what a way to finish the year!
Homecoming Burns Night HERE'S SPECIAL OFFER - TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! The Place Music Club kicks off 2009 with a true 'Homecoming Burns Night' featuring local stars; Seylan Baxter and Cheyenne Brown on Cello and Harp and for the same price Tattie Jam, a distinctive brew, featuring Seylan again and Ruaridh Pringle from the Outer Hebrides.
Cheyenne and Seylan offer a refreshing take on traditional Scots songs and melodies. The Cello, Harp arrangements provide a rich tapestry of sound on which both instruments and vocals weave a rare mix of evocative compositions. The Place welcomes back the locally based duo.
Tattie Jam expresses the heart and soul of traditional and folk songs and tunes in exciting and unusual ways. A particularly big sound for a duo: Seylan is a unique Celtic musician playing complex cello arrangements on a 5-string electric cello whilst singing lead vocals. This isn't the background 'accompaniment' style cello most listeners might expect, but something much more dynamic and exciting.
Half their material is written by Ruaridh, from driving reels and haunting airs, to songs: sad love songs and quirkily humourous observations through to thoughtful protest songs, all deeply influenced by the Scottish tradition but varying in style from traditional to bluegrass and even funk. Ruaridh has a strong, warm and clear voice likened to Dougie MacLean and Archie Fisher. Plus, he adds didgeridoo, mandolin, whistles and banjo for sheer diversity.
A rare mix and you're in for a rare night. The mike will be open for anyone wishing to contribute to the evening and if it's Burns material that is played, sung or recited, so much the better!"
THE PLACE MUSIC CLUB Saturday 31st January. 7.30pm. Tickets £7 available from the Iron Chef in Milngavie Precinct. A popular night so get yours early!
